Supporting the ‘Eco-Schools’ Programme

The Bodossaki Foundation supports the ‘Eco-Schools’ programme as part of its thematic grants in environmental education. The Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN), through the international Environmental Education programme ‘Eco-Schools’, promotes environmental knowledge and action among younger generations, fostering ecological awareness and developing active citizens committed to protecting the planet.

The ‘Eco-Schools’ programme, implemented in 650 schools across Greece, is part of a global environmental education network. It encourages active student participation in decision-making and action implementation, transforming schools into model sustainability communities.

The programme is aimed at all levels of education and is based on a seven-step methodology, with students taking a leading role. These steps include forming an environmental committee, developing an environmental action plan, and creating an ‘Eco-Code’ — a set of environmental behavior rules.

As part of the programme, schools carry out the following initiatives:

  • Waste Management: Implementing recycling and composting programmes to reduce waste.
  • Energy and Water Conservation: Adopting practices to reduce energy and water consumption, such as installing conservation systems and raising awareness within the school community.
  • Schoolyard Improvement: Creating school gardens and green spaces to promote biodiversity and enhance the aesthetic quality of the school environment.
  • Educational Activities: Organising seminars, workshops, and events to inform and raise awareness among students and the local community on environmental issues.

With the support of the Bodossaki Foundation, the programme will be implemented in 150 schools.
