The Bodossaki Foundation supports the ‘Local Green Heroes’ programme as part of its thematic grants for advancing the green transition in schools. The programme develops a participatory and experiential ‘green’ curriculum in Chania, in collaboration with the Municipality of Chania and with the support of Ecogenia and the European Outdoor Education Hub.
The programme includes training sessions for young trainers (ages 18–30), followed by eight weeks of workshops for elementary school students covering topics such as active citizenship, climate change, reduce/reuse/recycle, and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Through these activities, students and trainers gain collaboration skills and work experience while being inspired by sustainability experts to create a new generation of climate action ambassadors.
Approximately 700 students, 100 educators and administrative staff, members of the local community, local organisations, collaborating public schools, and parents are involved in the programme.
The initiative aims to enhance environmental education, mobilise and include young people, and foster ecological awareness in Crete through educational activities with a tangible environmental impact.
