This grant supports research into the development of an innovative and cost-effective methodology for the accurate diagnosis and monitoring of pancreatic cysts to prevent Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Current imaging techniques cannot reliably differentiate between potentially malignant and benign cysts, while surgical resection—the only preventive option—poses significant risks.
The new methodology leverages extracellular vesicles (EVs) as developing novel non-invasive techniques for monitoring patients with pancreatic cysts. This research, supported by the Bodossaki Foundation, involves collaboration between scientists from the Institute of Chemical Biology at the National Hellenic Research Foundation and the Liver-Pancreas-Biliary Unit of Aretaieio Hospital. Together, they are establishing a pancreatic cyst monitoring clinic, which will serve as a national reference point. The clinic will employ advanced DNA analysis methods of EVs, providing critical insights for early diagnosis and avoiding unnecessary surgeries.
