Funding for 29 Projects Aimed at Preventing and Combating Gender-Based Violence and Violence Against Children in Greece and Cyprus
The Bodossaki Foundation, as co-funder and coordinator, in consortium with the NGO Support Centre in Cyprus, announces the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) which have been selected to receive grants under the ‘Preventing Gender-Based Violence and Violence Against Children’ (PREVENT) programme, with a total budget of €2.3 million.
The PREVENT programme is co-funded by the European Union through the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme, the Bodossaki Foundation, and the NGO Support Centre. Its aim is to prevent and combat gender-based violence and violence against children by supporting CSOs active in these fields in Greece and Cyprus, and by enhancing their knowledge, capacity, and sustainability.As part of the programme, an open call for proposals for project funding was published on May 30, 2024, inviting proposals in the following thematic areas:
- Prevention and Combating of Gender-Based Violence (1st thematic area)
- Prevention and Combating of Violence Against Children (2nd thematic area)
Following the evaluation of the submitted proposals, it is announced that 24 projects in Greece and 5 projects in Cyprus will receive funding. A total of 95 applications were received across the two countries, involving 135 participating organizations. Of these, 72.6% fell into one of the programme’s special categories—small or grassroots organizations and those based in remote or rural areas—highlighting the significant need for CSO support in preventing and combating gender-based violence and violence against children.
Notably, as foreseen in the open call, at least 70% of the selected projects in the first thematic area benefit women as the target beneficiary group, and at least 20% of the funded projects focus on the second thematic area. Additionally, all CSOs chosen to implement actions involving direct contact with children have established child protection policies, which were required during the application process and included in the evaluation criteria.
To assist organizations in developing their projects, nine training sessions were held during the application period across six cities in Greece and Cyprus, as well as online. These sessions aimed to inform organizations about the programme and provide training in proposal writing and the development of child protection policies.
The funded projects will cover a wide geographic area in both Greece and Cyprus. In Greece, activities will take place in Attica, Thessaloniki, Crete, Thessaly, the Ionian Islands, the North and South Aegean, and other mainland and island regions. In Cyprus, activities will be implemented in the districts of Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos, and Famagusta.
