Development of a nationwide network for the measurement of atmospheric particulate matter

Air pollution is the greatest environmental risk to human health in Europe, as it is directly associated with various chronic diseases (cardiovascular and lung diseases, lung cancer). According to estimates, exposure to air pollution results in over 400,000 premature deaths in the EU annually.

Bodossaki Foundation and the Social & Cultural Welfare Foundation (KIKPE), aiming at improving the quality of the air we breathe, proceed fund the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH) and the PANAKEIA Infrastructure for the development of a nationwide network of low-cost sensors for measuring atmospheric particulate matter.

Continuous measurements will be available in real time on an online platform, readily available for use by local and national authorities in order to identify problems and improve air quality.

The programme is implemented in the framework of the “Initiative ’21”.
